Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Greenville - Graduates (2024)

Our Med-Peds program was founded in 2002, with our first class of graduates finishing in 2006. In the last five years, our graduates have chosen to enter careers in primary care, hospitalist medicine, and fellowship training in nearly equal nujmbers. The majority of our graduates continue to be involved in resident or student education either as part of their ongoing clinical practice or by serving as key clinical faculty. Recent Program Graduates

Megan McGarel

Dr. Megan McGarel is from Morristown, TN. She attended the University of Notre Dame where she earned a BS in Biological Sciences. She attended medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine. She is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. At the annual SC AAP meeting, Drs. McGarel and Sturgill were awarded runner up for their poster presentation on their QI project on implementing Point of Care HIV testing at our pediatric residency teaching clinic. She is an intentional, self-directed learner and wonderful patient advocate. Dr. McGarel will work as a Med-Peds primary care physician at Prisma Health Pediatrics and Internal Medicine – Wade Hampton.

Shanu Moorthy

Dr. Shanu Moorthy is from Madison, Mississippi. She attended Mississippi College where she earned a BS in Biological Sciences, then attended the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine. Dr. Moorthy is a dedicated clinician who sets high standards for herself and her team. She will serve as a Pediatric Chief Resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS.

Alex Perez

Dr. Alex Perez, Jr. is from Greenville, SC. He earned a BS in Statistics from the University of South Carolina and attended medical school at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Perez is a tremendous leader and educator who will serve his community as a hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital.

Abbey Stoker

Dr. Abbey Stoker is from Chapin, SC. She attended Clemson University, where she received a BS in biological sciences. She attended medical school at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. She is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She was a Med-Peds chief resident in her PGY-4 year. She is a compassionate, intentional, and humble physician. Dr. Stoker will work as a Med-Peds primary care physician at Prisma Health Pediatrics and Internal Medicine – Wren.

Ariel Sturgill

Dr. Sturgill is from Knightstown, Indiana. She earned a BS in Biology from Indiana University and attended medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. At the annual SC AAP meeting, Drs. Sturgill and McGarel were awarded runner up for their poster presentation on their QI project on implementing Point of Care HIV testing at our pediatric residency teaching clinic. Dr. Sturgill was awarded the Pediatric Department Med-Peds Achievement Award and the Nelson’s board study preparation award. She is a driven and compassionate physician and will work as a Med-Peds primary care physician at Indiana University Health Arnett Physicians Family Medicine in Lafayette, Indiana.

Jonathan Bates, MD – Dr. Bates graduated from Oklahoma Christian University Summa Cum Laude and completed his medical training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2019, during which he was inducted in the AOA Honor Society. He was awarded the 2009 Lily and G.D. Jackson Award, an annual award presented to outstanding first-year residents at Prisma Health who show exceptional promise. During his Med-Peds residency, Dr. Bates and Dr. Calvert were both awarded the 2021 AAP Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Grant for their quality improvement initiative delivering equitable dental care access to medically complex Latinx children. He was awarded the Pediatric Department Med-Peds Achievement Award. Passionate about primary care and with local family in Kansas, Johnathan will practice Med-Peds Primary Care at Newman Regional Health Medical Partners in Emporia, Kansas.

Sarah Calvert, MD-Dr. Calvert received her undergraduate education fromCentre College and her medical education from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. She was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society during her residency training in 2021. She and Dr. Bates were awarded the 2021 AAP Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Grant for their quality improvement initiative delivering equitable dental care access to medically complex Latinx children. She is a beautiful writer of narrative medicine. She has had her work published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and has received several awards and recognitions for her writing. She is passionate about infectious disease, caring for under-resourced communities, and global health. We are very fortunate that Dr. Calvert will stay within our system for her Adult Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville/Prisma Health.

Laila Hussein, MD – Dr. Hussein graduated from the University of South Carolina and received her medical education at the University of South CarolinaSchool of Medicine Greenville. She was selected by the medical students of the USC School of Medicine Greenville as one of the 2021 Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award recipients through the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Passionate about academic inpatient medicine and adolescent medicine, Dr. Hussein will serveat Prisma Health as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital and a physician in our Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine office.

Uzoamaka Ofodu, MD – Dr. Ofodu earned her bachelor’s and medical degree from a combined program at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. She served as our Med-Peds Chief Resident during her fourth year. She was also a co-director of the 2021 Pediatric Youth Immersion Camp of the Upstate, a pathway program for high school students interested in medicine to gain exposure and experience and foster mentorship. She is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and was inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha honor society during residency. Shewas awarded the Graduate Medical Education 2022 Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Award for her engagement in media advocacy, mentorship, and quality improvement. Amaka will work as a Med-Peds hospitalist at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Phillips DeRidder, MD – Dr. DeRidder completed her undergraduate education at the University of South Carolina and earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. In residency, she was awarded Pediatric Intern of the Year, Pediatric Resident of the Year, and the Pediatric Department Med-Peds Resident Teaching Award. She will pursue Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA), one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals.

Kim Okafor, MD – Dr. Okafor received her undergraduate education at James Madison University and her medical education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. During residency, her passion for infectious disease, health equity, and academic medicine was very clear. She was a recipient of the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award and the Graduate Medical Education 2021 Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) award, and Department of Medicine Resident of the Year Award. Dr. Okafor will pursue combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship at Vanderbilt University.

Amauri Latham, MD – Dr. Latham received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his medical education at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. From the start of intern year, Dr. Latham communicated his passion for inpatient hospitalist medicine and clinical teaching. We were fortunate that Dr. Latham will work locally as a Med-Peds Hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital.

Jordan Nickols, MD – Dr. Nickols received his undergraduate degree at Troy University and attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. During his Med-Peds residency, he received focused point-of-care ultrasound training. He was passionate about academic medicine and clinical reasoning. Dr. Nickols will serve as an academic Med-Peds hospitalist and new clinical ultrasound director in Auburn, AL.

Kevin Applegate, MD – Dr. Applegate received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his medical education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He was a Med-Peds Chief Resident in his PGY-4 year and helped to adapt curriculum and support our residents during the COVID pandemic. After graduation, he will work as Med-Peds hospitalist in Bolivia, NC.

Justin Holladay, MD -Dr. Holladay attended Clemson University for his undergraduate education, receiving a degree in Microbiology. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. As a resident, he was known for his intelligence, kindness, and teamsmanship. He was an excellent down-to-earth mentor and leader during his residency. After graduation, Justin will practice Med-Peds Primary Care at Heritage Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Simpsonville, SC.

Quinn Hunt, MD -Dr. Hunt attended Wofford College for his undergraduate education, receiving dual degrees in both Biology and Spanish (BA). He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. As a resident, he was awarded the 2018 Lily and G. D. Jackson Award – an annual award presented to outstanding first-year residents spanning every specialty that show exceptional promise. He also received the 2021 Humanism and Excellence in Teaching (HETA) Award, selected by the USC School of Medicine Greenville students. As a resident, he was praised for his servant leadership, approachability, thoughtfulness, and intelligence. As fourth year, he served as our Med-Peds chief resident and received the Department of PediatricsMed-Peds Resident Achievement Award. After graduation, Dr. Hunt will practice Med-Peds Primary Care at Heritage Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Wren, SC.

Eric Polley, MD -Dr. Polley attended Bob Jones University for his undergraduate education, receiving a degree in Biology. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. As a resident, he was known for his almost encyclopedic knowledge base, unmatched passion for teaching, and mentorship. He received the 2021 Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award (HETA). After graduation, Eric will start his fellowship in Adult Pulmonary / Critical Care at University of Virginia (UVA).

Jackie Queen, MD -Dr. Queen attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both his undergraduate and medical education. He received a degree in Chemistry before earning his MPH and MD at the UNCSchool of Public Health and UNCSchool of Medicine, respectively. As a resident, he was known for his passion for Sickle Cell Disease and transitional care, his diligence and hardwork, intelligence, and resilience. He conducted transitional care research with Dr. Alan Anderson, the director of the Prisma Health Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program. After graduation, Jackie will start his fellowship in Combined Hematology/Oncology at John Hopkins University.

Zachary Wood, MD -Dr. Wood attended Guilford College for his undergraduate education, receiving a degree in Biology. He earned an MPH at the University of Edinburgh and completed his medical educaton at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. As a resident, he was known for his sense of humor, intelligence, hardwork, and thoughtfulness.After graduation, Dr. Wood will practice Med-Peds Primary Care at the Wade Hampton Prisma Health Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in Greenville, SC.

Ranjan Banerjee, MD.Ranjan is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and medical school education. During his intern year, he was the recipient of the Lily and GD Jackson Award, given to the most outstanding interns in the health system. He was also named as a Resident Member of Gold Humanism Society, voted on by University of South Carolina School of Medicine Class of 2017 and has served as our Med-Peds Chief Resident. After graduation, Ranjan will be undertaking an adult cardiology fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington with the ultimate goal of providing care for adult patients with congenital heart disease.

Luke Burton, MD.Luke is a graduate of Western Carolina University where he was a decathlete and where he also majored in Spanish. Luke then attended the Eastern Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. As a resident, Luke was known for his intelligence, resiliency, calm leadership, and sense of humor. After graduation, Luke will be continuing his training as a fellow in pediatric critical care at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Tien Nguyen, MD.Tien attended the University of Central Florida where she got her B.S. in mechanical engineering, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, and had a brief but shining career as a rocket scientist. She then attended medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa. As a resident, Tien was known for her incredible work ethic, knowledge and dedication to her team members. After graduation, Tien will be working as an academic hospitalist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Walt Roberts MD.Walt received his B.A. in English literature from Clemson University. He then received his M.D. from Mercer University School of Medicine where he was student body president for 4 years. As a resident, Walt was known for his compassion, communication skills, dedication, and sense of humor. After graduation, Walt will be working at the Wade Hampton Prisma Health Pediatrics and Internal Medicine practice here in town and will serve as one of our teaching faculty.

Dr. Kevin White MD.Kevin attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his undergraduate studies. He also received his MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health and his MD from the UNC School of Medicine. As a resident, Kevin was known as a very thoughtful, diligent worker who excelled as a teacher and mentor for his learners. After graduation, Kevin will be joining the teaching faculty at Duke University as an academic hospitalist.

Ryan Dean, MDRyan joined our program after obtaining his medical degree at the University of Minnesota where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Ryan was widely known within our program as a mature, thoughtful leader and skilled teacher. Ryan was a winner of the Lily and GD Jackson award as an intern, and served with great dedication as our Med-Peds Chief Resident in his 4th year. After graduation, Ryan and his wife Abby will be moving closer to family as Ryan will be joining the teaching faculty at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital and the Orlando Health Medical Group as a pediatric hospitalist and transitional care specialist in Orlando, Florida.

Tori Grenade, MDTori joined our program after obtaining her medical degree from the Mercer University School of Medicine where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kapa Phi Medical Honor Societies. As a resident, Tori was a very bright, no-nonsense worker who always gave her best for her patients and her team and always made sure to have fun once work was over. She also has a passion for serving patients all over the globe, making medical trips to the Philippines and Honduras. After graduation, Tori is returning to her home state to practice both urgent care and hospital medicine with Med Stop and In Compass Health in Houston County, GA near her hometown of Eastman.

Charles Kidd, MDCharles joined our program after obtaining his medical degree from the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. As a resident, Charles was known for his numerous children, his calm demeanor, strong work ethic, and his patient teaching style. He also was the recipient of the 2018 USC Greenville School of Medicine Resident Teacher of the Year Award, given to best resident teacher in the Greenville Health System. After graduation, Charles will be returning home to practice Outpatient General Pediatrics and Internal Medicine with Huntsville Hospital System’s Fayetteville Medical Associates in Fayetteville, TN.

Megan Tate, MD. Dr. Tate is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Societies. During residency Megan was exceptionally dedicated and extremely bright and won the pediatrics department “Full Nelson” Award given to the resident with the best performance in the pediatric board prep program. After graduation, Megan will be going to the University of Arkansas Medical Center to start her fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care. .

Lece Webb, MD. Lece is from Lexington, KY and is a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She has a long track record of mentoring and service. She has served as mentor and coach to youth and students in a variety of settings, and was widely known in our program for her knack for helping others behind the scenes to succeed and give their very best. Lece also volunteered her medical expertise on mission trips to Brazil during her third and fourth years of residency. After graduation, Lece will be starting a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
