Do you need a prescription for Banamine for horses? ›

Banamine Paste is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory recommended for use in horses to alleviate inflammation and pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders. It may also be beneficial for colic. This product is only available for existing clients. Animal name(s) are required to verify prescriptions.

HORSE: The recommended dose for musculoskeletal disorders is 0.5 mg per pound (1 mL/100 lbs) of body weight once daily. Treatment may be given by intravenous or intramuscular injection and repeated for up to 5 days.

Studies show onset of activity is within 2 hours. Peak response occurs between 12 and 16 hours and duration of activity is 24-36 hours. The recommended dose for the alleviation of pain associated with equine colic is 0.5 mg per pound of body weight. Intravenous administration is recommended for prompt relief.

Based upon veterinarian practical experience, Banamine® is often prescribed for abdominal discomfort (colic), fever and eye pain, and Bute is prescribed for musculoskeletal injury and inflammation. How should I administer NSAIDs to my horse?

Flunixin meglumine, commonly referred to by the brand name Banamine®, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

If you believe your animal may be experiencing any side effects, consult your veterinarian. Banamine^® is not intended for use in humans.

Like most medications Banamine can be toxic or have side-effects. Toxicity can occur when given over a long period of time, when too much is given (overdose), or given too frequently. The main complications associated with toxicity are generally with the kidneys and gastro-intestinal tract.

Liquid Banamine can safely be given by mouth. Simply draw up the same amount you would inject, remove the needle, and give by mouth the way you would a dewormer. Again, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND IM INJECTION OF BANAMINE.

Veterinarians routinely use the injectable form in the vein (IV).

BANAMINE treatment should not exceed 5 consecutive days. Not for use in horses intended for human consumption.

Does Banamine make a horse sleep? ›

Banamine does not cause sedation, improve gut motility, or cure colic. However, many times pain is the cause of decreased gut motility, and if Banamine decreases pain, gut motility can increase.

In horses, flunixin meglumine is typically used to treat osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries, and to alleviate visceral pain associated with colic. NSAIDs such as Banamine® can help to minimize physiological stress, improve welfare, and increase treatment success for horses.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most commonly used drug for pain management in horses. Examples include bute (e.g. Equipalazone), flunixin (e.g. Equinixin or Finadyne) and meloxicam (e.g. Metacam). These medications relieve pain and help in the reduction of inflammation and fever.

Banamine can cause muscle damage when injected into muscle. In most horses this does not cause an issue. Although in some horses the spores of the bacteria Clostridium can lie dormant in healthy muscle and begin to proliferate if muscle is damaged.

Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for Horses

Popular NSAIDs for horses include phenylbutazone (Bute), firocoxib (Equioxx), ketoprofen (Ketofen) and flunixin meglumine (Banamine).

Most veterinarians will recommend giving Banamine. Walking can help, but it is unproven. Walk your horse if it appears to make them feel better. Stop if it seems to make them worse, or you detect other signs of pain.
